"Why shouldn’t art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world."
— Pierre-Auguste Renoir (via artnet)
"Particular concern is growing around the rapidly inflating prices of a small number of exclusively male artists in their late 20s and early 30s."

"But it’s also to do with composition. I like the composition of a picture, the dance of colours and shapes across it, more than I like the subject. I love whatever subject I’m working on at the time because it’s taking me into the picture. When I’m done with the picture, I’m probably done with the subject. Some might say that’s a bit hostile and bit detached. But I go with my impulses and it seems that the art of composition is a great art."

"A must see in London is the show of new work by Alan Charlton at Annely Juda Fine Art, opening tonight in London. These new paintings by the arch mathematical monochromeist are utterly inspiring. Beautifully displayed in the two magnificent galleries of Annely Juda, hung as always, by the artist himself. I know that London is grey and so are the works, but wow, when you go and see them you come away completely cleansed and amazed how underrated this artist is by the wider art and auction world. These works are so pristine that I panic when people get close to them, but the technique is awe inspiring. It is also a must for mathematicians as all the works are based on the measurement of 4.5cms. Best show I’ve seen in London for ages."
